My thoughts, with the caveat that I am _not_ a math person: I think because it's possible to communicate the ideas behind research without using MathJAX/LaTeX/PGF/TikZ, just in words, because words are the most important part of communicating ideas. I'd check out Cantor's Paradise for some examples of impactful writing - in this post, for example (https://www.cantorsparadise.com/optimal-recruiting-with-sophisticated-mathematical-methods-the-secretary-problem-8f516ec29e06), they use a combo of our code formatting and screenshots to show what they need, but the main takeaways are in words. It would be more ideal if we had support for MathJAX and other formatting, but right now it's not something we see in high demand. Maybe if mathematical writing grows on Medium, it's something we would put on our product roadmap for future.
