I hear you. It's a pain and the formatting definitely not bibliography-friendly. I've done it and it's messy! This is on our list of feature ideas that would make writing on Medium even better for academics, though personally I might rank "ability to add multiple authors on a story" and "LaTex/math formatting" a bit higher on priority list based on the demand I've heard for those capabilities. But we're doing more research and listening to community. So thanks for writing to suggest it - noted, and if we hear from more people that this is a high-value add, we'll prioritize it!
