Seems like a mis-interpretation. The lack of payment is not due to lack of funding. In fact, last year we announced a milestone of profitability. What Tony means by "there is no more investor money coming" is that we have made a strategic decision not to rely on investor money and instead to operate as a sustainable business. That means we make decisions that are profitable for our business and have a positive impact on our writer community (because Medium can't exist without our community of writers).

As an aside, this strategy also means we are beholden to the whims and political alignments of other tech companies that rely on big VC investors, which is a good thing.
